Why Mobile Phones cannot Replace Emergency Call Pillars

The mobile phone has become an integral part of our everyday lives. However, the emergency call pillars in busy places such as railway stations or motorways is still very much in use: you never forget it at home, the battery never runs out, the connection always works and the location is automatically transmitted to the control centre.

But how do you set up such an emergency system in other important locations? Is it complicated?

Required Components

As an example, we would like to show you the configuration of an emergency call system consisting of the following three components:

  • a SIP-enabled emergency call pillar (e.g. based on the vicCOM IP platform)
  • a cloud telephone system (e.g. 3CX-Cloud, sipgate)
  • an IP-enabled phone or mobile phone with a SIP client (softphone)

Configuration Steps

We set up our emergency call system in three steps using the 3CX cloud telephone system.

Step 1: Configuration of the users (=call destinations, e.g. an emergency call pillar) in the 3CX Cloud telephone system

  • Navigate to the admin console (1) and create a new user (3) in the ‘Users’ section (2)   - (Admin>Users>+ Add User)

 

  • Define a SIP ID (extension) and a name for the new user

 

  • Add an IP phone for the user (IP Phone  > Configure a Phone)

  • On the configuration screen, select the option ‘I will configure the phone myself’ and confirm with ‘Next’

  • Save the settings that are now visible and confirm with ‘Add Phone’

  • The final screen contains relevant data for step 3. Please do not close it.

Step 2: Configuration of the emergency call remote station (IP telephone, softphone on a smartphone)

  • 3CX-Cloud telephone system: Create the emergency call remote station (call destination when pressing the emergency call button) as an additional ‘user’ (see step 1)
  • If necessary: Install the softphone on your smartphone via the 3CX app OR generate a QR code in the 3CX cloud server under Users > General and scan it with your smartphone via the app (automated transfer of the configuration files to the app)

Step 3: Configuration of the emergency call pillar

  • Connect the emergency call pillar (vicCOM IP Plattform) to the internet
  • Open SIP menu: Configure 3CX-Cloud telephone system as SIP server (please copy the data from the final screen of step 1)

  • Open the phone book and specify the call destination(s) [the emergency call remote station] via ‘Add contact/Kontakt hinzufügen’ (SIP ID from 3CX of the user created in step 2)

  • Note: You can connect up to four call buttons to the platform and assign them to the defined call destination(s) from the phone book

End of installation

Calls from the emergency call pillar are now forwarded directly to the softphone on the smartphone. For security reasons, only the smartphone can end the call so that no emergency call is lost or does not reach its destination due to incorrect operation of the emergency call pillar.

Troubleshooting

  • No call tone is transmitted when calling: Check the status of the ‘PBX delivers audio’ function (Admin>Users>Options) in the 3CX-Cloud telephone system of the softphone. It must be activated.
